Discover The Eternal City

Discover Rome's Rich History
Whilst you have no doubt planned how you will immerse yourself in the beauty of Rome, here are a few of our absolute favourites for your consideration.
Firstly, the iconic Colosseum and The Roman Forum
The Colosseum and Roman Forum are adjacent, iconic archaeological sites in Rome, with the Colosseum as the massive amphitheatre for games and the Forum as the heart of ancient Roman public, political, and social life, both usually visited together with the Palatine Hill and requiring tickets, offering a deep dive into Roman history, engineering, and daily life through their ruins and structures.
No visit to Rome is complete without visiting. We would recommend booking via a tour guide (Get Your Guide App). The Colliseum is also beautiful when lit at night.
Next the majestic Vatican City
Again, whatever your religous persuasions, this has to be on your itinerary.
The must-sees are St. Peter's Basilica, an immense Renaissance church and the Vatican Museums, a vast complex housing treasures culminating in the breathtaking Sistine Chapel, famous for Michelangelo's ceiling. Don't miss St. Peter's Square, Bernini's colonnades framing it, the Dome climb for views, and the Vatican Gardens, all offering deep dives into art, history, and faith.
We would definitely advise a small party tour guide for this (Get your Guide App)
Trevi Fountain and The Spanish Steps
Less than ten minutes apart on foot, these are both iconic spots to visit. They can both get very busy so would recommend an early start. The Trevi Fountain is also beautiful at night when lit. Aside from the architecture, both spots are great for people watching.
Pantheon
The Pantheon is a remarkably preserved ancient Roman temple, now a church, famous for its massive concrete dome with a central opening (the oculus) that provides natural light.
Queues can be long so again go early or buy a fast-track ticket.
Vittoriano
This is our favourite building in the heart of the city. A stunning structure that you will be unable to resist photographing. Climb to the top (or take the glass elevator) for fabulous views.
Piazza Navona
Famed for its showstopping fountains, the city’s most famous square blends heavy-hitting Renaissance art with cute cafes and shops. Expect to see street artists perform here. (5 minutes walk from The Pantheon)
Campo de Fiori
Campo de' Fiori (Field of Flowers) is a lively square in central Rome, famous for its vibrant daily market selling fresh produce, flowers, and local goods. A great breakfast spot to people watch.
Via Del Corso
The equivalent of London's Oxford Street, Via del Corso is Rome's vibrant, historic main street, a bustling 1.5km artery connecting Piazza Venezia (south) to Piazza del Popolo (north), famous for its diverse shopping (high street to designer). If you need retail therapy, head here!
Trastevere
Another must visit on your Rome itinerary in our opinion. Go inside the historic church 'Basilica di Santa Maria' to have your mind blown. Then walk slowly through the labyrinth of cobbled, narrow, ivy-clad alleys, ancient buildings, and lively squares, especially vibrant at night. A favourite bar of ours is 'Pimms Good'. Always a warm welcome!
Transport Links
Rome is serviced by two airports. Fiumicino - Leonardo di Vinci (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA).
From Fiumcino to Monteverde
Fiuminco is the largest of the two airports. You have a few options. The favoured and least expensive is to get a train to Trastevere station and then a 15 minute walk. Alternatively a taxi will cost 45-50 euros from the airport or 10 euros from Trastevere Station.
From Ciampino to Monteverde
There are a lot of cheap combinations but we would advise getting a taxi from outside the arrivals which takes 30 minutes and costs around 45-50 euros.
Once you are in Monteverde transport links are very good. Our home is less than 100 metres from both bus and tram stops that will have you in the city centre in about 20 minutes. A ticket costs 1.50 Euros.
The taxi app 'Free Now' is the equivalent of Uber and is widely used.

Monteverde
Monteverde is a beautiful authentic Roman district and our home
is at the very heart of it!
Within 50 metres you will find a daily market for the freshest meat, fish, fruit and veg as well as two supermarkets. Within 100 metres you will find numerous coffee shops (our favourite is Crismi Bar), pattiseries, pharmacies, ATM, and the (in)famous Mad For Beer English style pub.
Restaurant and Bar Recommendations
Within the city centre you will pay quite a premium to eat and drink.
Our not exhaustive list of restaurants are outside of the city and where you will see the locals eat. They are in the main traditional Roman kitchens.
In Rome, it is all about the food! Decor and furniture are nowhere near as important as the cuisine.
In no particular order, here are a few of our favourites.
RESTAURANTS
Osteria dal 1931
This is an historic, family-run spot known for classic, authentic Roman cuisine. It gained international recognition after being featured on an Anthony Bourdain documentary. It is a 10 minute walk from our home.
Address: Via di Donna Olimpia, 44, 00152 Roma
Trattoria Da Cesare al Casaletto
Roman antipasti, pasta, meat & fish, plus local wines, at an airy venue with a vine-covered patio.
A 10 minute walk from our home.
Address: Via del Casaletto, 45, 00151 Rome
L'Osteria di Monteverde
Traditional Roman cuisine with a modern twist. Delightful presentation. Friendly atmosphere, almost exclusively frequented by locals. Again, a 10 minute walk from our home.
Address: Via Pietro Cartoni, 163/165, 00152 Rome
Bruno ai 4 Venti
Very welcoming and super helpful staff. The quality of the products is excellent and the choice of wines is also very wide. 20 minute walk or 5 minutes in a taxi.
Address: Viale dei Quattro Venti, 172, 00152 Roma
Hostaria Da Corrado
A tavern of the past, spartan, but with a Romanesque heart. Super relaxed and unhurried atmosphere for either lunch or dinner. In Trastevere.
Address: Via della Pelliccia, 39, 00153 Roma
Osteria da Zi Umberto
Cosy, wood-beamed trattoria with a large terrace on a beautiful square, for typical Roman dishes like cacio e pepe pasta. In Trastevere.
Address: Piazza di S. Giovanni della Malva, 14, 00153 Roma
BARS
Mad For Beer
Not just a pub but a community hub. This is our happy place. A very eclectic bunch of patrons but very friendly too! The bar food menu is varied and pretty decent. Always a good atmosphere if the mighty Lazio are playing on the TV but they do show the lesser teams (AS Roma) games too! If you see a dog inside or outside the bar, take a treat from the tin on the bar and you'll make instant friends. Less than 100 metres from the appartment.
Address: Via Federico Ozanam 62, 00152 Roma
Pimms Good
Situated in Trastevere this is another happy place. During the day sit outside and watch the world go by. At night the vibe changes and it's a great place to visit. They have an extensive Cocktail menu and the food is excellent too. Very warm and friendly staff.
Address: Via di Santa Dorotea, 8/9, 00100 Roma
